Close-knit group beats winter chill
SOME of Maroondah's poorest residents can rug up against the winter cold thanks to the warm hearts of a group of keen knitters.
Ringwood group Chicks with Sticks delivered its first batch of woollen hats, scarves and wrist warmers to Dunelm supported residential service (SRS) in Croydon last week.
Organiser Angela Leung said she started the group earlier this year to help vulnerable people in the community.
"The residents were just so excited, they thought they had to pay for them and they couldn't believe we were giving them for free," Ms Leung said."When you think a set like this could normally cost you around $60 it makes a lot of difference to someone who can't afford much to get them for free."
She said the next dispatch of winter woollies was earmarked for residents of L'Abri SRS in Ringwood North.
Ms Leung said her group had 10 regular members and encouraged anyone who could knit or had wool to donate to get in touch.
"We've had a fantastic response from the public, I've given up trying to count the sets of clothes we made, it got exhausting after a while," Ms Leung said.
Chicks with Sticks meets fortnightly at Urban Life Cafe, Ringwood and members are expected to supply their own wool and knitting needles.Details: 9870 7203
